The Long Walk continued . . .

We walked to Haven Green, Ealing's new railway station and discussed our plans.

"My son, I don't think I will come to any of your aunts and uncles, it would not be helpful. It could cause distress. In their eyes I am the black sheep of the family."

"What does that mean dad?"

"It is not easy to answer. It covers so many things. Like a lot of soldiers marching with one out of step. Some say there are no blacks and no whites and they without a fault cast the first stones.

"Now listen carefully, you go to your Aunt Emma's. She is the best of the bunch. Tell her you have to meet me on Haven Green at 2 '0' Clock and mind your manners."

It was about 11 '0' Clock when I made my way down Lancaster Road passing Wakefield's, the photographers, where once I had my photo taken. It was the last house on the right. The door was opened by my mother's brother, Uncle Tom.

"Good gracious," he said, "Emma, look who is here."

Soon I was sitting down with tea and toast.

"What brings you here, Albert?"

"Dad's looking for work," I replied, "I have to meet him at 2 '0' Clock."

"Where are you staying?"

"Dad said West Ealing."

I was subjected to many questions. My replies were lies or half truths. I had the choice to tell the whole truth or shall I say, handle the truth carefully. There was a look in my aunt and uncle's eyes as if they knew I was walking a tight rope.

"We shall have dinner at 1 '0' Clock prompt. You may stay," said aunt.

During the next hour I played around with my cousin's top and whip which he had chalked different colours on the top and when spinning it was like a rainbow. Whilst playing, I think my aunt and uncle must have talked a bit about me and dad because while having dinner I was asked more questions.

At 1.50 I left with some sweets and sixpence. No reference was made to dad.
